Thuja green giant, or Western Red Cedar, is a species of cedar, an evergreen conifer of the family Cupressaceae, from northwestern North America. The California red cedar or Thuja plicata is a species of arborvitae, an evergreen conifer of the family Cupressaceae , from the Northwest of North America. This species is particularly grown as an ornamental tree, especially in gardens as hedges. It is known among the Anglo-Saxons as the Western Redcedar.

This species is native to the western parts of North America from southern Alaska and British Columbia to northern California. Thuja green giant is also found in the interior of the continent to western Montana, Idaho and the Canadian province of Alberta. It is one of the most common trees in the northwestern Pacific regions of North America, where it is most commonly associated with Douglas- fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ), Western Tsuga ( Tsuga heterophylla ) or Vancouver fir.

Thuja green giant grows not only in lush forests, but is also a riparian species, found on the banks of streams and also in swamp forests in its native range. It is a kind of shade, able to reproduce under a thick shade. The species has been introduced throughout the temperate regions, especially in the eastern United States, Western Europe, Australia (at least as far north as Sydney) and New Zealand.
